People and Paper – Tradition and the Future

The Conrad Jacobson Group – Founded in 1897 and based in Hamburg, Germany – is a company with over 100 years experience in paper, board and pulp trading.

The group also provides services to cover the entire business…including marketing, logistics, over administration, transport control and financing.
With its long-standing tradition and a global network of subsidiaries and partners, CJG always seeks to balance between the interests of its suppliers as well as customers.
This is how good relationships grow
At Conrad Jacobson, wood is where it all starts. Before good business relationships can develop, the quality of our raw materials has got to be perfect.
Now, more than ever, paper is a very special substance. It is made of natural materials, which are today receiving a lot of well-deserved attention. Responsible handling of natural resources is the key to healthy economic growth.
This maxim is particularly true of our business. Whether paper, pulp or newsprint paper – win-win relationships can only result if we permit our raw materials to grow in peace. A relationship in which the value chain starts in the forest. And which provide room for trust to grow at its own pace.
People and Paper
Long before people talked about media, paper was significant for culture and society, with uses ranging from a means of communicating information to a transport tool or decorative element.
Paper will always be around, even in the digital age. People read it, people send it, people pack with it, people enhance with it…
It“s part of our daily life, making it brighter, simpler and – naturally – more hygienic, too. For us at Conrad Jacobson, a passion for paper has defined our mission and imbued our daily business since 1897. Already our founders acted according to the principle of quality over quantity. The same goes for good paper and pulp as for good business relations: in the end, what breeds success is what will prevail. After all, it“s not without good reason that anything essential is recorded on paper. Joint ventures sealed with a signature.
Paper and the Environment
Our guiding principle has always been: natural resources must remain natural. Conrad Jacobson“s production is simply based on the utilization of water, energy and wood. So it only makes sense that we would logically continue to consider ourselves bound by a voluntary pledge to buy our wood from sustainable sources. We view the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), initiated by the WWF in Toronto in 1993, as a sensible campaign for joint responsible action.
From manufacturers all the way to consumers: only through cooperation can a balance of all interests be achieved. Already, some demonstrable positive improvements can be seen. Marketing and responsibility go hand in hand, just like commercial success.
Business and Change
As a commercial enterprise, Conrad Jacobson has to deal with change as a matter of course. No question about it: markets change, technologies are short-lived and global questions demand new answers. Yet all this dynamism notwithstanding, solidity and calculability are of decisive importance. The banking centre of Hamburg with its long Hanseatic tradition is a byword for this competence.
We“ve been working with the same core of banking partners for decades. This enables us to offer our business partners tailored and solid concepts up to and including project financing as well as logistical and insurance components. The fact is, a lot more can be accomplished based on deep-rooted partnership. Together, we conduct our business proactively amidst change.
The Environment and Business
Today pursuing business success necessarily entails including the environment as an active variable. That“s why, for us, quality assurance begins with the initial product we process and trade in. Be it birch or eucalyptus, oak or aspen from Spain, Sweden, Canada or Costa Rica.
For our partners and business associates, that means reliability and flexibility at the same time. They all know that we at Conrad Jacobson do everything we can to support reasonable environmental measures. But they also know that we“re elastic enough to remain constantly flexible in business.
Whoever preserves the environment in a positive sense should likewise be conservative in the sense of joint management. Every side should get their due.
Change and Tradition
Tradition is a living value at Conrad Jacobson. What would we be without our deep-rooted customer relationships? What would we be without our generation-spanning experience? What would we be without our employees“ long history of commitment?
„Networking“ is all the rage today. We“ve been operating on this principle for many years. A good network consists of good contacts, which in turn have a lot to do with the way people interact with each other. It“s no wonder our friends in business around the world are often real friends, too. And we are on the lookout for new relationships.
Tradition and the Future
Without a good understanding of tradition the future will be rough going. Innovation in particular requires well-founded know-how. You could say our innovations started in 1897, the year of our founding. As the German proverb holds, you can“t uproot an old tree. You don“t fiddle with tried and tested processes.
But if a tree needs more light, it should get it. Targeted intervention promotes growth. For Conrad Jacobson, that means constantly thinking outside the box, reacting flexibly to partners“ questions and finding the optimal solutions in close cooperation. That“s how today“s management provides fertile soil for tomorrow“s business models.
The Future and Pulp
Pulp is not something that is often in the limelight. But pulp products fulfill vital tasks, mainly hidden from the public eye. Its medical and hygienic uses include bandages and nappies (diapers). That“s why we at Conrad Jacobson place all the more value on high-quality primary materials: whether its long- or short-fiber pulp or CTM (chemi-thermomechanical pulp).
Sensitive end products demand the utmost care from the outset. In this market, specialists talk to specialists. We“re pleased to be among them. And we look forward to getting to know even more.
The Future and Paper
Paper is a world of its own. And the world needs paper in all its manifold varieties. We at Conrad Jacobson concentrate on kraft paper, tissue paper, corrugating raw materials and folding box boards.
This is where paper really reveals its practical uses: decorate, package, send. And to do it, we need partners who have one thing in common with us: they do what they can do best.
The Future and Newspaper Print
Newspapers are a good indicator of how much paper the future will require. Despite all the digital progress, printed newspapers will continue to exist in the foreseeable future. In this area there“s just no substitute for paper.
And it translates into large volumes and constantly rising demand. Conrad Jacobson supplies traditional and new markets alike with the reliability you expect coupled with a high degree of flexibility.
The product range comprises of nearly all kinds of paper, board and pulp.
